Gelato Boats Are a Real Thing in Sicily—And Yes, They’ll Pull Up Right To You

There are lots of must-see attractions and things to do in Sicily, and experiencing authentic gelato is definitely on that list. Created in Italy during the 14th century, and sold at thousands of gelaterias throughout Italy, it’s so popular that you don’t even have to be on land to find it.

During the summer season, there are literal boats that sell gelato near coastal cities throughout the Mediterranean Sea. One example is Cefalù, an ancient city that sits along Sicily’s northern coast, and at different points in history, was home to the Greeks, Romans, and Arabs. There, the “Gelato Boat Bar” conveniently serves locals and tourists, floating from boat to boat with chilled deliciousness.

The setup looks like a fun fusion of boat and ice cream truck, with images of the available flavors scooped in a waffle cone. The menu appears to include branded ice cream flavors, too. According to ladycollinsstyle, gelato is sold for €5, which is $5.84.

If gelato on a boat isn’t bucketlist-worthy, I don’t know what is. Just imagine chilling with your significant other on a boat off the Mediterranean coast, and you hear the classic ice cream truck jingle approaching. I’m unsure if the gelato boats play music like our ice cream trucks here do, but it would be awesome to imagine that they do.
