Costco Is Selling A Nearly 4-Pound Ramen Kit

Ramen lovers know how pricey a bowl can get, and apparently, Costco does too. In response, the retailer has just dropped fresh deli ramen kits. But there’s a catch: They’re currently only available in Canada.

Vancouver-based content creator sopheats gave us a front-row seat to her recent Costco visit, where we got a good look at what the kit includes: eight slices of chashu braised pork, six soy-marinated eggs, shoyu ramen broth, green onions, and ramen noodles. Costco prices the kits at $12.99 CAD per kilogram, or $1.29 CAD per 100 grams.

To clear up the confusion, I ran the numbers to see if the kits actually offer as much bang for your buck as sopheats says. After doing the math, the answer is yes, they definitely do.

According to Eat Healthy 365, a typical bowl of restaurant ramen can weigh anywhere from 500 to more than 800 grams with all the fixings included.

Since sopheats lives in Vancouver, it only made sense to check the average price of ramen there. According to local Reddit users, a bowl can range anywhere from $13 CAD on the low end to $25 CAD on the high end.

As for how someone ended up paying around $21 for Costco’s kit? I did the math so you don’t have to. At $12.99 CAD per kilogram, a $21 kit weighs roughly 1.6 kilograms, or about 3.5 pounds.

That lines up with sopheats’ estimate of around three servings and means Costco’s kit packs enough ramen for multiple bowls. Of course, how many bowls you actually get depends on your appetite, because I know somebody out there is looking at 1.6 kilograms of ramen and thinking, “Light work.”

Savings aside, how does it actually taste? Those who have tried it say it’s pretty good for the price, although the broth could use a little sprucing up.

“The broth lacks a bit of depth but I added some chili crisp spice and boom it was perfect!” one person commented.

Costco hasn’t said whether it plans to bring its fresh deli ramen kits to the U.S., but one thing’s for sure: People aren’t too happy that Canada gets all the fun.

“It’s so annoying that it’s not here only in Canada 🍁😥 @costco come on 🙏 we want it in the US too,” someone commented on an Instagram post by Mouth Attack.
