Feeling Stressed? Science Says Pizza Might Be The Answer

In a delightful twist of news, the secret to de-stressing might be just a slice away. Yes, that beloved circle of cheesy goodness known as pizza may hold the key to calming nerves and lifting spirits. Good news for those who are plagued by stress and anxiety (wait isn’t that all of us?).

Nutritionists agree the toppings can load your pie with stress-reducing powers. Tomato sauce carries antioxidants and immune-boosting vitamin C, while the cheese brings tryptophan to the table, helping your brain blast those serotonin receptors. Swap that crust for whole grain and pile on vibrant veggies and lean proteins for a mood-booster.

A biometric analysis by the University of East Anglia, a public research university in Norwich, England, found that the smell of freshly baked pizza can significantly reduce stress and boost mood. According to the study, 42% of participants said the aroma made them feel comforted, while 28% reported a noticeable mood boost. Researchers attribute this effect to the activation of the limbic system — the part of the brain that processes emotions and memories — and the release of feel-good neurotransmitters like serotonin and dopamine.

The study also revealed that 17% of participants felt an excited sense of anticipation when smelling pizza. Personally, that number seems a bit low — but as a pizza enthusiast, I might be biased. Whether it’s the shared joy of a Friday night feast with friends or the quiet comfort of a solo slice, pizza is more than just dough, sauce, and cheese. It’s a social unifier that brings people together, sparks laughter, and helps create cozy memories that soothe the mind.

Who are we to argue with science? Plus in these crazy times, I believe everyone deserves a slice or five to combat the stressors of everyday life.
