Chipotle Will Test ‘Happy Hour’ Concept In Response To Sales Decline

In an interview with Yahoo! Finance, Chipotle CEO Scott Boatwright announced plans to launch “Happier Hour,” a new value-led strategy to attract more customers.

“We’re going to give it a shot and see what it looks like for us. We’re calling it Happier Hour, so think maybe a couple of tacos and a beverage sometime during the middle daypart … And we feel like it’s a compelling offer, and it creates value for our consumer,” Boatwright explained.

The company hasn’t said when it will launch the new value concept. It plans to test it first, with the goal of keeping each menu item under $10. The announcement follows a recent Super Bowl promotion that gave away $1 million in free food to 100,000 people via redeemable codes. Both strategies come in an attempt to turn-around Chipotle’s fourth quarter same-store sales, which declined by 2.5%.

In the past year alone, the company’s stock has dropped by 32%, which appears to have inspired it to take a note from McDonald’s approach to aggressively offering new affordable menu items. Thanks to its value-led strategy, McDonald’s shares achieved a 8% gain, with an U.S. sales increase of 6.8%, and global systemwide increase of $9 billion in the fourth quarter of 2025.

To coincide with Happier Hour, Chipotle will release a handful of limited-time and value-forward menu items, like the chicken al pastor it recently relaunched, the small bowl of grilled chicken for $3.95, and a high-protein cup for $3.80.

Boatwright added, “What’s great about the offering in the protein menu is we’re not discounting the product. We’re just celebrating something that’s on the menu that may have little awareness today. I think having a taco at $3.50 and a protein cup around $3.80 across the country is really an approachable price point that really gives the consumer a meaningful way into the brand, but also solves for those people that are looking for a different choice.”

While no date has been set for the launch of Happier Hour, it’s safe to assume that Chipotle will begin rolling it out sometime soon.
