Girl Scouts Face Cookie Shortages Amid Supply Chain Issues

We are officially one week into the return of America’s favorite season: Girl Scout Cookie season. However, some of your favorite flavors may be harder to find than before due to supply chain issues. Even the Girl Scouts aren’t immune to the fragility of our economic state.

Back in December 2022, Little Brownie Bakers (LBB) issued a press release regarding unforeseen supply chain issues which would affect the production and distribution of Samoas and Toffee-tastic cookies. LBB is responsible for the production of some of the classic Girl Scout cookie flavors including Samoas, Tagalongs, Toffee-tastic, Thin Mints, and others; a second distributor, ABC Baker, makes up for the other available cookies and treats.

Why do different suppliers make a difference? Simply put, different suppliers produce products for different regions, meaning only some will be affected by the shortage. In this case, the region in question isn’t physical but metaphysical: digital orders. This year, Girl Scouts have elected for an online ordering platform to boost cookie sales. According to the press release, digital orders can still be submitted but may take longer to deliver than normal.

“We sincerely apologize for the inconvenience this causes to our communities,” they said in their release. “We know that cookie sales are critical when funding Girl Scout programs, and we at USAGSO and GSUSA are working hard with LBB to ensure a successful season for our girls.”

The good news is in-person distribution and sales haven’t been affected by the shortage, meaning that you’re still free to seek out your local Girl Scout and secure a box of Thin Mints.
