2. KFC: Double Down

The tremendous effect that KFC’s Double Down Sandwich has had upon the foodie culture since its discovery back in August of 2009 has been astronomical. The sandwich was later confirmed and added to the menu nationwide in April of this year, and it has seemingly never looked back. Who knew that a sandwich that featured two thick, boneless pieces of deep fried white meat chicken filets as the buns to a sandwich filled with bacon, Monterey Jack and Pepper Jack Cheese and a slathering of Colonel’s Sauce would cause such a ruckus?

On one end of the spectrum, health advocates were up in arms about the sandwich’s calorie, fat and sodium count. The other end of the spectrum embraced the idea, and the web fueled the fire with a host of fan created mashups of the sandwich: Death of the Double Down, Double Down Bacon-a-nator, Double Down Halloween Costume, Double Down Quarter Pounder, The Octuplet Down Tower & Taco Castle, Elvis Double Down Sandwich, Glazed KFC Double Down Donut, The Double-Double Down and the Quadruple Down. It’s no wonder the KFC Double Down monopolized so much of our mind in 2010.
