Japan Wins Tiramisu World Championship—In Italy’s Own Backyard

Japan just took home first place in Italy for the World Trophy of Professional Tiramisu.

Held in Rome by the International Federation of Pastry, Gelato and Chocolate (FIPGC), the championship saw pastry pros from around the globe battle for the ultimate title in the dessert’s homeland. The top honor went to Aya Okada from Ishikawa, Japan, who wowed judges with a grand piano–shaped tiramisu layered with maraschino and black cherries.

Italy’s own entry—a Sicilian-style tiramisu—came in second place, while Morocco rounded out the top three.

What’s wild is how symbolic this win feels: Japan mastering Italy’s most iconic dessert on Italian soil. If anything, it shows how global pastry culture has become—where tradition meets reinvention, and perfection knows no borders (just layers of mascarpone and pride).
