Florida is a literal hotspot for funny, disturbing, and downright ridiculous headlines. The latest Sunshine State debacle involves two men and Uber Eats. According to Insider, 21-year-old Trayon Morgan and 38-year-old Roy Blackwood scammed the delivery app out of over $1 million. Local police say that the scam took place over 19 months, beginning in Janurary 2022.

A statement from the Broward County Sheriff’s Office gave details of how the scam worked, which involved the suspects creating fake accounts on the Uber Eats app; one as a customer, another as a courier. Uber Eats allows couriers to finish orders by providing a prepaid card that has a limit of $700.

Apparently, the suspects would make fake grocery orders as couriers and cancel them, then use the prepaid cards to purchase gift cards. The two men successfully scammed 27 different Walgreens in the area, and are now charged with “organized scheme to defraud” and “grand theft.”

Speaking to Insider, an Uber spokesperson said, “Uber continues to invest in robust anti-fraud systems and technology, which allowed our Global Investigations Team to proactively alert law enforcement about this case. We are committed to combating fraudulent activity on the Uber platform and working to ensure bad actors are held accountable.”
