Revered Burger Scholar, George Motz, Is Finally Opening His Own Burger Joint

George Motz is one of those people that, unlike Ohio State, deserves that “THE” in front of his title, because he is truly THE Burger Scholar of the USA.

Through his acclaimed documentary, Hamburger America, and his Travel Channel show, Motz has toured the entire country and sampled regional variants from all over. You’d be hard pressed to find someone that has more knowledge in the burger realm than him.

Turns out that Motz also makes a pretty mean onion smash burger of his own, and the pop-ups he’s done have sold out nationwide since 2017.

Now, Motz is finally getting his own burger establishment, a permanent location to sling his smash patties and more. He confirmed in an Instagram post that Hamburger America, a restaurant that shares the name with his original film, will be opening in New York’s SoHo district in 2023.

The goal is for this place to be “a step back in time,” according to Motz, with his onion burgers joining a rotating menu of regional burgers from all over the USA, often times featuring some of his favorite spots.

New York locals can expect the brick-and-mortar to open around May.
