A Pop-Up In Japan Is Serving The Last Meals Requested By Death Row Inmates

“What would your last meal be if you were on death row?” It’s one of those questions that we ask each other all the time, and have grown fascinated to see what the most infamous of inmates have requested.

Whether it be the standard burger or the simplistic plate of veggies, there’s a pop-up in Japan where you can try a few of those last meals.

Created by the artist collective Chim-Pom, the limited-time Ningen Restaurant in the Kabukicho district of Tokyo, is offering a chance to try some of the actual final requests made by past inmates.

Examples of these include the meal ordered by Gary Mark Gilmore, famous for demanding that the death sentence be carried out on him following a pair of murders. The restaurant’s version of his last meal (steak, potatoes, coffee, and milk) is a steakburger served with potatoes.

Another one of the last meals served are the fruits and veggies requested by Judy Buenoano, who fed arsenic to her husband, son, and fiance in hopes that their deaths would get her life insurance money.

Fittingly, this “last meal” restaurant will be the final event happening in the building its housed in. According to Spoon & Tamago, it is scheduled to be demolished shortly after the pop-up ends, which Chim-Pom explained was the result of a local redeveloper and entertainment bureau acquiring the building.

The pop-up is running through October 28, and is open from the hours of 2 PM – 9 PM local time.
