Taco Bell’s Newest Breakfast Innovation Features A French Toast ‘Taco Shell’

Taco Bell has been getting really creative when it comes to flipping different iterations of the taco shell. They’ve been taking anything imaginable that’s not a tortilla and using it to their advantage. We’ve already seen waffles, fried chicken, and even eggs used in the past. This time around, The Bell is innovating taco shells around a different breakfast classic: French toast.

The new French Toast Chalupa is a blend of the sweet and savory sides of breakfast that Taco Bell hasn’t pushed since the days of the Waffle Taco. The two are in the same vernacular, with scrambled eggs, bacon or sausage, and syrup on the side for drizzling or dunking. However, the French toast version of this flavor-blending breakfast taco is lacking one thing its predecessor had: cheese.

It’s strange that Taco Bell would choose to leave cheese off of this new item. That oozy, savory flavor is what makes something like the Sausage, Egg, and Cheese McGriddle craveworthy. Maybe the cinnamon notes coming off the French toast just don’t fly with the cheese? We’ll just have to trust TB on that call, I guess.

The French Toast Chalupa is currently undergoing testing in Dayton, Ohio, where it’s selling for $2.49.
