REJOICE: The Taco Emoji Finally Exists

Although there’s no word on plans to bring the emoji to iOS, or Android, or any phone, the taco emoji does finally exist.

According to Quartz, the folks who make emoji characters happen, will be adding the taco emoji and 37 other new emoji to Unicode 8.0 Wednesday, June 17.

Unicode regulates the coding for computer text, including emojis, so the fact that it’s in Unicode opens the possibility for operating systems such as iOS to eventually incorporate the new emoji characters.

All of the new characters can be found on emojipedia, and you’ll find among them other food emojis like the burrito, hot dog, popcorn and cheese wedge.

Taco Bell has been fighting for the taco emoji for some time now, pointing out how ridiculous it is that there are 25 different clock emoji characters and even a VCR emoji like if it’s 1992, yet no taco emoji.

Matt Prince, PR Newsroom Manager at Taco Bell, said:

“Unicode Consortium’s approval of the Taco Emoji brings us one step closer to filling a void in the hearts and keyboards of taco lovers everywhere. Our fans love tacos, and they love emojis – the 30,000 petition signatures and support on social media is proof of what is possible when you bring those things together. With this major milestone, we’re hopeful the taco emoji will find its way into the mobile operating system updates soon to make our taco dreams a delicious reality.”

Hopefully, we’ll all be able to text our friends the taco emoji followed by a question mark anytime we want some tacos.
