Learn How To Easily Poach The Perfect Egg Every Time [WATCH]

Poaching an egg can seem extremely scary, especially if you’re going for that perfect runny yolk. I know it seems like a complicated procedure, but this video makes the entire process seem so simple and doable.

The video, created by Co-op and SORTEDfood as part of their joint cooking course Now Cook It, breaks down the simplest tips and tricks you need to easily poach eggs at home. SORTEDfood chef Ben Ebbrell takes you through the entire process step-by-step.

Ebbrell starts by bringing eggs up to room temperature (either with a glass of warm water or leaving them out of the fridge for a while before cooking). After that, he heats the water in a deep pan until bubbles form on the bottom of the pan and begin to slowly move to the surface. If you’re unsure of how to get there, he recommends the following:

“Boil the water, then bring it down to a simmer before turning off the heat to poach.”

To make dropping the eggs into the pot easier and alleviate fears of breaking the yolk, Ben cracks them into small cups beforehand to slowly lower them into the water later. He then seasons the water with salt, before adding the eggs in one at a time, giving them time to set and not combine.

After 2-3 minutes, the egg yolks should be soft, but the whites should still be set, leaving you with the perfect runny yolk that you can get every time.

I definitely learned a lot about poaching from this video, and might try my own hand at poaching eggs at home now.
