Meet DRU, Domino’s Pizza-Delivering Robot

Delivering pizzas can be a dangerous occupation. Contrary to how stoner flicks and adult entertainment portrays the job of a pizza delivery person, sometimes you run into some real nasty people.

In situations like these, perhaps its best to send in the robots.

Domino’s Australia has developed a prototype pizza delivery vehicle to get those pies to paying customers.

Called DRU, the vehicle has compartments to keep customers’ food hot and drinks cold. While it won’t actually venture onto the open road, it will take sidewalks the way a delivery person would if they were on foot.

The machine can navigate from the Domino’s to the customers’ residence and route the best path to take. DRU can also detect obstacles on sensors and avoid them.

We’re also assuming customers will have to pay by phone or mobile app so that DRU doesn’t get mugged as he goes about his job.

To make sure everything’s legit, the pizza company is working with the Queensland Department of Transport and Main Roads to make sure the robot meets legislative requirements during its development.

Still, it could be a while before there’s a massive fleet of pizza robots bringing us our pies.

Recently, the CEO of Carl’s Jr. also expressed interested in replacing the human workforce with machines. Could this be a coincidence?
