Walmart Is Testing Fresh Sushi Bars And The Reactions Are Exactly What You’d Expect

A little over a week ago, Jacksonville, Florida became home to the newest Walmart Supercenter. The location continues the company’s plan to build or convert more than 150 stores over the next few years, in a bid to modernize its retail experience.

While the new outpost includes several enhanced features, like improved delivery, more space, and interactive digital touchpads for locating products, everyone appears more interested in the upgraded grocery sections, which now house the retailer’s first-ever fresh sushi bars.

To say the least, Walmart’s food quality is no stranger to being on the receiving end of criticism, so people are a bit skeptical about the retailer serving raw sushi. According to 24/7 Wall St., a recent study conducted by the American Customer Satisfaction Index, based on 31,293 completed surveys, ranked Walmart 17 out of 19 in the Supermarket category, with its quality and freshness of meat and produce being one of the metrics.

On a post about the news, shared by @Dexerto, the response was less than forgiving, if not totally hilarious. We’re talking memes ranging from a random guy laying in a hospital bed, captioned “Me after eating Walmart sushi,” to the classic vomit scene from Family Guy, and more.

Other jabs include “I don’t know if that’s a good idea,” “next time on 1000 ways to die,” “Florida will be ground zero for the next pandemic outbreak,” and “Finally, a place where you can buy toilet paper and test your stomach in one trip.” For many, Walmart just isn’t a place that you associate with freshness.

Everyone isn’t grossed out by the idea, though. Especially people who remember when Walmart sold fresh lobster. The new Jacksonville location is not the first to feature a fresh sushi bar, either. Walmart has rolled them out at the other new locations in Apollo Beach and Ocala, Florida. And guess what? Those who have tried it say that it’s pretty good and made fresh daily.

Suffice it to say, if the sushi bars turn out to be a success, you’ll surely see one popping up at a Walmart near you.
