Russia Begins Destroying Thousands Of Pounds Of Imported Food

According to BBC News, Russia is destroying every and any food that was imported from countries that placed sanctions on the nation.

In 2014, sanctions were placed on Russia over the annexation of Crimea, and it is believed that it led to him banning foods from western countries that August.

Thursday, the ban officially went into effect as they began taking literal tons of pork, tomatoes, peaches and cheese, and throwing it all in landfills, the New York Times reports. Local news stations covered the events throughout the day, showing all the food getting plowed and destroyed.

This isn’t the first time Russia has banned imported food, most notably in 2009 when they banned milk from Belarus, and in 2013 there was another ban on milk imported from any European country.

A petition has been started by Olga Saveleva against the destruction of the food and it has garnered over 280,000 signature as of this writing.

However, not everyone is against the ban, as supporters have been seen in Moscow supermarkets with “Eat Russian” t-shirts.
