Subway Unhealthier Than KFC & Carl’s Jr? [INFOGRAPHIC]

With so much attention given to KFC and Carl’s Jr. for their quote-un-quote “unhealthy” additions to an ever “escalating fast food war”, I’d like to pose a quick food-for-thought (pun-intended). Has the media overreacted to KFC’s Double Down Sandwich, and even more so to Carl’s Jr.’s Footlong Cheeseburger? As a food community, we are so often guilty of following brand names at their branding level. It often shocks me to find out how many of my friends feel such an uplifting vibe, such a “healthy” vibe when they walk into a Subway restaurant, incorrectly assuming whatever they order will lead to their fit summer physique. Is this truly the case?

Well, of course not. It would also be naive of me, or anyone for that matter, to say they had never fallen under a similar mindset, but it’s important to approach the idea and discuss it. I’ve gone ahead and selected a rather popular Subway sandwich, the Spicy Italian. According to the info graphic, you can quickly see that the amount of fat, calories, sodium and saturated fat is in fact higher than both Carl’s Jr’s and KFC’s supposed “monstrosities to American culture”.

What’s the point? The point is to raise a discussion. Raise a few eyebrows. For the record, the Spicy Italian Sandwich from Subway is not the unhealthiest stock item you can select from Subway. It’s not strange for me to witness a customer or two on every visit ask for a Philly Cheese steak sandwich with all the fixings, including Chipotle Mayo…regular mayo…extra cheese. Maybe a foot long pizza sub sandwich? It must be healthy, it’s from Subway right?!

Highlighted in red above are the amusing nutritional values for Subway Sandwiches with particular calorie and sodium counts that are higher than KFC’s Double Down sandwich. Be sure to note that all of Subway’s numbers are for 6″ sandwiches, so for those of you who you get down on a Foot long (that’s what she said), make sure to double the numbers across the board.

Where do we go from here? Eating fast food is always going to be a tricky one for those who are trying to remain health conscious. The idea behind it all is to simply know what you’re eating. The conclusion is that there are a plethora of sandwiches at Subway that are as unhealthy, if not more unhealthy than many options you have at countless other fast food operations. It’s just Carl’s Jr. and KFC who have been the highlight of recent food war accusations, but as much as we love Subway here at Foodbeast, with the information presented, I’d like to declare them an equal opportunity offender…a suspect of fast food war crime as well. Are we victims?
