Doritos is an unexpected entrant into the protein group chat.

The brand just announced Doritos Protein, a new tortilla-style chip hitting shelves next month with 10 grams of protein per one-ounce serving. A single-serve bag packing 17 grams of protein is set to follow later this year.

Yes, protein. In Doritos.

The move drops Doritos straight into the fast-growing “functional snacking” category, where chips are no longer just chips. They’re macro-friendly, gym-adjacent, and label-conscious.

The new chips launch in two familiar flavors: Nacho Cheese and Sweet & Tangy BBQ. According to PepsiCo, the goal wasn’t to reinvent Doritos, but to keep the bold seasoning and signature crunch intact while layering in added protein. The formula uses dairy-based casein as its primary protein source and skips artificial colors and flavors.

If this feels inevitable, that’s because it kind of is. Protein is everywhere right now. Research cited by the brand shows 86% of Americans are actively adding protein to their diets, 70% want protein in salty snacks, and more than half prioritize protein during snacking occasions.

Translation: chips had to bulk up eventually.

Doritos Protein will roll out in 7-ounce and 12.75-ounce bags, with additional sizes planned throughout the year.

The bigger question isn’t whether protein snacks are trending. It’s whether Doritos fans want their late-night snack to double as a macro play.
