To Honor Jonathan Gold, Los Angeles Will Light Up In Gold For An Entire Day
Pulitzer Prize winner and legendary Los Angeles Times food critic Jonathan Gold passed away on July 21st, just a week shy of his 58th birthday. He left behind an immeasurable impact on the L.A. food scene, proving that nothing is more delicious than the power of the pen, with his verbose and exquisite writing exposing the best of the Los Angeles food scene, whether it be in a fine dining restaurant or a taco stand.

To celebrate his 58th birthday, which would’ve been on July 28th, and to honor his legacy, numerous major landmarks throughout the city of Los Angeles will light up in gold on that day. The new L.A. Times building in El Segundo will have the first display at sundown. Following that, each of the following places will either illuminate in gold or present a message or projection to celebrate Jonathan Gold:
- The L.A. City Hall tower
- The Wilshire Grand
- Broad
- US Bank Tower
- The Arthur J. Will Memorial Fountain in Grand Park
- Natural History Museum
- LAX
- The Pacific Wheel on Santa Monica Pier
- The Wiltern
- The Ford Theatres
- The Theatre at Ace Hotel
- Chinatown Summer Nights
- The Fairplex in Pomona
Gold’s family has asked that those who wish to honor the food enthusiast should support nonprofit organizations like the L.A. Regional Food Bank, The Hirshberg Foundation for Pancreatic Research, Heal The Bay, or Al Otro Lado in lieu of flowers. There will also be a future public celebration of Gold’s life and contributions to the Los Angeles food scene on August 26th, with details to still be determined.
It’s incredible to see the entire city of Los Angeles come together to thank a pivotal writer instrumental in exposing and inspiring the rich treasures of Southern California’s dining landscape.
