Here’s Why You Can’t Find Topo Chico On Shelves
If you’ve noticed empty Topo Chico shelves lately, you are not imagining it. Here’s what’s happening with the beloved sparkling beverage.
Parent company Coca-Cola, confirmed to KTLA that it has temporarily paused production due to ongoing upgrades and water quality issues at its production facility in Monterrey, Mexico. This issue has only impacted the brand’s classic sparkling water product while the brand’s canned cocktails and Topo Chico Sabores remain unaffected.
Coca-Cola acquired Topo Chico in 2017. However, the soda giant continues to honor the product’s Mexican roots by maintaining production at the original source in the mountainous region since 1895.
Today, Topo Chico has integrated itself into the American lifestyle as more consumers have shifted towards choosing sparkling water as their everyday beverage in addition to bartenders incorporating the carbonated classic as a go-to mixture in tequila-based cocktails. In fact, Ranch Water is a Texas staple, made with tequila, lime juice and Topo Chico, that originated in West Texas before popularizing throughout the state and the southern region.
Coca-Cola hopes to have the core product back on U.S. Shelves later this year but has not confirmed an exact timeline. Until production resumes, eager fans will have to reach for another alternative.
