After 127 Years Anchor Brewing Co. Is Shutting Down

127 years is a long time to be in business. According to a press release, San Francisco-based Anchor Brewing Company has announced that it’s shuttering its doors. Since 2016, faced with a challenging economic climate and declining sales, the 127-year-old company has struggled to remain afloat.

In the release, Anchor Brewing spokesperson Sam Singer said, “This was an extremely difficult decision that Anchor reached only after many months of careful evaluation. We recognize the importance and historic significance of Anchor to San Francisco and to the craft brewing industry, but the impacts of the pandemic, inflation, especially in San Francisco, and a highly competitive market left the company with no option but to make this sad decision to cease operations.”

Anchor Brewing’s roots date back to the California Gold Rush, and as with any legacy brand, it left an indelible mark on not only craft brewing but people as a whole. “Right now, these are some tough economic times. And Anchor’s demise is symbolic of that,” Singer told ABC7 News

While brewing has come to a halt, the remaining workers will continue to package and distribute the beer in stock until the end of July.
