There’s A Reason KFC Japan Just Put 3 Eggs On A Massive Chicken Sandwich
Japan’s annual Tsukimi season is approaching, which means fast-food chains across the country are once again looking at the full moon and thinking, “You know what that looks like? An egg.”
Tsukimi, or “moon viewing,” is a centuries-old Japanese autumn tradition centered around admiring the moon and enjoying seasonal foods like round dango rice dumplings. Over time, fast-food chains have gotten in on the festivities with limited-edition menu items featuring eggs, whose round shape resembles the full moon.
KFC Japan is taking that tradition particularly seriously this year with five limited-edition Tsukimi items, including one burger stacked with three eggs.
Returning favorites include the Torori Tsukimi Filet Burger for 590 yen (about $4) and Torori Tsukimi Twister for 490 yen (about $3.30). Both feature a fried egg-style omelet filled with a rich, melty egg yolk sauce, while the Twister adds teriyaki sauce and mayonnaise to the mix.
Things escalate from there.
The new Torori Tsukimi Wafu Katsu Burger Kobore Tartar for 640 yen (about $4.30) pairs a Japanese-style chicken cutlet with the egg and a generous helping of tartar sauce.
Then there’s the absolute unit: the Torori Triple Tsukimi Wafu Katsu Burger Kobore Tartar.
Priced at 990 yen (about $6.60), the burger stacks three fried egg-style omelets over the chicken katsu, with enough tartar sauce spilling out to make the whole thing look like someone tried to fit three full moons into a single KFC sandwich.
Technically, the triple-decker isn’t completely new. KFC Japan tested it at seven locations last year, and after a positive response, the chain is giving the towering burger a nationwide release for 2026.
Dessert gets in on the moon viewing, too. The Omochi to Noko Custard no Tsukimi Pie combines chewy mochi with Madagascar vanilla bean custard inside a crispy pastry shell. This year’s version comes with 20% more custard filling.
KFC Japan’s entire Tsukimi collection arrives August 26 and will stick around while supplies last.
