This Afghani Flatbread Is Stuffed With Generations Of Flavor

One of the greatest parts about food is that there’s always something new to try, with the excitement of a potential favorite looming in your next bite. Not only does food come in endless flavors, shapes, and sizes, it’s a great gateway to learning about different cultures. It shows us that we’re far more alike than different.

When it comes to brands that make delicious yet culturally distinct foods, Bolani definitely fits the bill. Based in California, Bolani is a woman-led and family-owned company that specializes in stuffed Afghani flatbread. Carrying the tradition over from her homeland, founder Nazie Sidiq managed to turn her grandmother’s recipe into a successful business.

Naturally, Bolani’s journey wasn’t without its challenges; the “Land of Opportunity” required some tending before it bore fruit. After moving to New York City with her family in the 1970s, Sidiq noticed how her neighborhood was a literal melting pot of flavors. The only thing missing was her homeland culture.

Several years, marriage, and kids would follow before the idea of Bolani began forming inside Sidiq’s head. She’d go from working at local restaurants, to making her grandmother’s recipes for her family and friends, then selling them at the local farmer’s market, where her stuffed Afghani flatbread quickly became a success, selling out each week.

Bolani’s flatbread flavors are all vegetarian/vegan and made using locally-sourced ingredients. Options range from spicy potato and spinach-filled varieties, to curry and pumpkin flatbread flavors. Those with dietary restrictions need not worry, as whole wheat and gluten-free options are also available. There’s even a kebab option made with Beyond Meat for plant-based folks.

In addition to their delicious selection of flatbreads, Bolani sells a wide range of homemade sauces and hummus. Some of their options include aromatic artichoke hummus, savory vegan basil pesto, along with spicy and sweet jalapeño. Simply put, Bolani has no shortage of tasty flavors to try with your flatbread, on sandwiches, or as dips.

Now a local success, Bolani can be found at farmer’s markets throughout California, various retailers, Target locations, Whole Foods, and online too.
