California to Provide Free Breakfast and Lunch for Students

Students in California have great news to look forward to going into the new school year, as they will now be eligible for free breakfast and lunch meals, regardless of their family’s level of income.

This makes California the first state in the U.S. to provide a free statewide school meals program to students. Next up will be the state of Maine, where officials also approved a similar meal program that will take effect later in 2022.

This is all possible due to California’s Universal Meals Program, which provides funding for breakfast and lunch each day of school to students who request them. Eligible students include those in state public school districts, charter schools, and other public classrooms throughout California.

California Governor Gavin Newsom signed Assembly Bill 130 into law last year, which cleared the way for this much needed Universal Meals Program to go into action.
