Don’t Eat These Trader Joe’s Or Wonderful Pistachios Until You Read This [RECALL]
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention is advising consumers not to eat Wonderful Pistachios after multiple salmonella outbreaks.
The outbreak is being investigated by federal health officials and tracing it back to a California pistachio grower. The pistachios in question are marketed under the Wonderful brand (“get crackin”) and Trader Joe’s private label.
Yesterday, reports came in of the recall after 11 people in nine states were infected with Salmonella Montevideo. Here’s what the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention noted about the outbreak last night:
– We recommend that consumers do not eat and retailers do not sell recalled pistachios produced by Wonderful Pistachios.
– On March 9, 2016, Wonderful Pistachios of Lost Hills, California voluntarily recalleda limited number of flavors and sizes of in-shell and shelled pistachios because they may be contaminated with Salmonella.
– The pistachios were sold under the brand names Wonderful, Paramount Farms, and Trader Joe’s, and were sold nationwide and in Canada.
– Products can be identified by a lot code number that can be found on the lower back or bottom panel of the package. A table of recalled products is available on the Advice to Consumers page.
– These products have a long shelf life and may still be in people’s homes.
– CDC, multiple states, and the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) are investigating an outbreak of Salmonella Montevideo infections.
– Eleven people infected with the outbreak strain of Salmonella Montevideo have been reported from 9 states.
– Two ill people have been hospitalized. No deaths have been reported.
– Collaborative investigative efforts of state, local, and federal public health and regulatory officials indicate that pistachios produced by Wonderful Pistachios are a likely source of this outbreak.
– Investigation is ongoing, and we will update the public when more information becomes available.
Wonderful Pistachios is reminding folks that only specific products and lot codes are affected, and to check if your skew is one of those in question here is a 9 page .pdf to sift through (sounds cynical, I know).
“Wonderful Pistachios takes food safety matters very seriously and is working closely with health officials to identify the source of the problem,” the company said in a statement. “In an effort to further enhance our food safety program and ensure the health and well-being of our consumers, we have, effective immediately, proactively increased our sampling frequencies and lot size testing.”
