The French Baguette Is Now Certified By The U.N. For Its Cultural Significance

When one thinks of French cuisine, the thought of biting into a freshly baked baguette may come to mind for many. And now, the baguette’s status as being vital to French culture has been certified by the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO).

The crusty, slender loaf is so woven into the fabric of French culture and has made such a significant impact on the rest of the culinary world that it has now been given cultural protection by UNESCO.

As reported by CNN UNESCO officially recognizes and certifies the “artisanal know-how and culture of the baguette” something of “Intangible Cultural Heritage.” The organization defines “Intangible Cultural Heritage” as “traditions or living expressions inherited from our ancestors and passed on to our descendants.”

The French baguette now joins the culinary ranks of kimchi, couscous, Belgian beer, and more as being UNESCO certified and protected.
