This Ham Luge Puts A Meaty Spin On Serving Whiskey

If you’re a fan of finely crafted cocktails, odds are you’ve experienced a drink served through an ice luge. An ice luge, also known as a martini luge and shooter-block, is an ice sculpture that’s made specifically for serving liquids. A narrow channel is carved into it that cools liquids as they pass through, with the dazzling display elevating the serving experience. Ice luges are usually the centerpiece of ice bars, which are common at special events, and are sculpted into something that relates to the occasion.

As fancy as ice luges are, it was only a matter of time before someone put an ingenious spin on this high class serving method. Chef William Dissen, owner of The Market Place, is no stranger to curating unique culinary experiences. His latest involves transforming a cut of ham into a savory luge. Considered an “Appalachian” take on a traditional luge, bourbon and whiskey is poured through the ham and infused with a delectable smoky flavor that carries a hint of saltiness.

In a video shared to Instagram, the ham luge is introduced in all of its meaty glory. A narrow passage is perfectly carved into it, which glistens with remnants of smoke-infused bourbon and whiskey. Without tasting the results, the display itself is eye-catching.

Novelty aside, if the guy’s reaction in the video is any evidence, the ham luge is a mighty tasty way to elevate everyday whiskey. Fortunately for Asheville, North Carolina locals, you can stop by The Market Place and try it for yourself.
