Chili’s vs. TGI Fridays: The Pettiest Casual Dining Beef of 2025

“Nurse, the girls are fighting again!”

In this edition of corporate restaurant social media beef, we’ve got a round between Chili’s and TGI Fridays. In this economy, casual dining joints are struggling to get people in the building, with many locations closing all across America. One way Chili’s has survived is through the recent virality of its Triple Dipper special—offering a customizable variety of appetizers at a low price, luring in young customers looking for a deal. The popularity of this deal is what sparked the snappy internet banter between Chili’s and TGI Fridays.

Chili’s tweeted, “Y’all see all these other restaurants trying to copy the Triple Dipper?” And TGI Fridays replied, “@ us next time.” That kicked off a snarky back-and-forth that pretty much ended with Chili’s follow-up: “Like this if you thought TGI Fridays was closed.”

There are two reasons why this is such a petty, witty, and funny exchange—one being that TGI Fridays definitely added their dupe version of Chili’s Triple Dipper to the menu, hoping to ride its success and virality. The other being TGI Fridays’ (and all casual dining chains’) slow collapse. The company filed for bankruptcy at the end of 2024, closing down a majority of its locations and leaving just 85 standalone restaurants in the U.S., according to CNN.

Chili’s — 1. TGI Fridays — 0.
