Earlier this year, the FDA announced the ban on Red Dye No. 3. So now, artificial dyes are being tossed out faster than yesterday’s leftovers. Shoppers are progressively becoming more health-conscious and demanding clean-label products free from artificial additives, preservatives, and dyes.

Consumer spending is clearly shifting toward more natural and organic ingredients — and now, FUL Foods, a food-tech startup, is tapping into microalgae as a bold, plant-based alternative to Blue Dye No. 1, which is slowly being phased out of products across the U.S.

FUL Foods is officially launching blue spirulina-based syrups and powders as a natural alternative to the artificially colored blue foods and drinks still common across the U.S. Blue Dye No. 1 has long been one of the toughest colors to replicate naturally — but that hasn’t stopped the food industry from shifting toward cleaner, healthier ingredients in response to growing consumer demand.

According to a press release shared by FUL Foods, “FDA and HHS are introducing a plan to phase out artificial dyes from foods on the national level within the next two years, accelerating a shift in the global food market.” The company makes a strong point in its announcement that legacy brands will need to shift their strategies for its existing product portfolios to replace the Blue Dye No. 1 — which is found in approximately 24.2% of products addressed in a sample of US grocery store products.

FUL Foods is a Netherlands-based brand founded by three innovative women — Julia Streuli, Cristina Prat Taranilla, and Sara Guaglio — who’ve channeled their passion for sustainability into a food-tech solution for the looming phaseout of artificial dyes. Their secret weapon? Spirulina. This aquatic superfood grows rapidly, uses very little freshwater, and captures CO2 more efficiently than your favorite houseplant.

With the rollout of its sustainable products, FUL Foods provides a nationwide solution to ensure that our favorite blue goodies stay bright and dazzling, while perhaps helping boost our general wellness.
