27 Tons Of Whole Chicken Recalled For Contamination

More than 27 tons of chicken from GNP Company are under recall following the detection of contaminants. The Minnesota-based company sells its products under the brands Just BARE and Gold’n Plump.

The recall only effects one retail item, Just BARE whole chicken in four-pound poly-bags. The contaminated products have June 26 use-by dates.  The chicken can also be identified by the USDA mark of inspection code P-322 and Universal Product Code 024105594057.  The rest of the recalled meat was bulk and custom orders for institutional and food service outlets.

No illnesses linked to the recall have been reported so far. The Class I recall was issued Saturday by the U.S Department of Agriculture’s Food Safety and Inspection Service. The product contamination is believed to be linked to an isolated product tampering incident at the company’s Cold Spring processing plant the week of June 6. According to the company website, a third-party lab tested the chicken and found the contaminant to be “benign, natural materials including dirt/sand.”

The company urged costumers not to eat the recall items, and instead to get rid of or return the chicken for a refund.
