TIL: The Mystery Flavor of Dum Dums Lollipops is A Mixture of Two Flavors

I knew I wasn’t crazy when I said my Mystery Dum Dums lollipop tasted like buttered popcorn and cherries. I was so sure of myself. Yet my bottom lip quivered as the other kids hotly informed me that it was obviously grape, like the color of the wrapper, psh. Oh really now?

Turns out, I was right.

The Mystery Flavor pop, the one with questions marks covering the wrapper, is a mixture of two flavors combined when the end of one batch of candy is mixed with the beginning of the next batch. This helps production fluidity as the tedious hassle of shutting down and cleaning machines after each flavor ends can hinder efficiency. Also, it makes for a really cool reason to create a “Mystery Flavor” that’s continually changing.

Buttered popcorn & Cherry FTW.
