This YouTuber Rolled Down a Hill (Again) To Win A Giant Wheel Of Cheese
For the second year in a row, popular German YouTuber Tom Kopke has taken home a giant wheel of Double Gloucester cheese after winning the 2025 Cooper’s Hill Cheese Rolling competition. The annual event, held in late May in Gloucester, England for over two centuries, challenges participants to chase a rolling wheel of cheese down a steep, 200-yard hill — often with chaotic and painful results.
Thousands gather each year to witness the tradition, where injuries are common thanks to the hill’s intense slope and high-speed tumbles. Despite the risks, only two competitors were injured this year. “All the people at the top said they were going to steal my title, but this is mine,” Kopke told the Associated Press. “I risked my life for this. It’s my cheese. Back to back.”
Rolling safely downhill is harder than it looks. The steepness increases the force of gravity, causing you to roll faster. Serious injuries are commonplace, from sprained ankles and broken bones to concussions. However, only two people were injured in this year’s competition. The BBC even resurfaced footage from the 2005 race, a reminder that the event’s thrill — and absurdity — taps into the reckless joy of childhood. Because at Cooper’s Hill, it turns out chasing cheese is ageless.
