Subway Planning to Sell Sandwiches Via ‘Smart Fridges’

Soon you’ll be able to get your hands on a Subway sandwich, vending machine style. As part of a new platform called Grab & Go, the fast food giant plans to expand to non-traditional locations like airports, truck stop plazas, college campuses, convenience stores and hospitals.

What makes Subway’s vending machines different is that they’re “smart.” Artificial intelligence-driven, they’re one-stop shops that you can ask directly about any of its product offerings. Also, transactions are contactless and cashless, sandwiches are restocked each day by a nearby location ensuring freshness and after each purchase and UV-C light is used to keep things sanitized.

In September, University of California San Diego was first to experience the brand’s interactive smart fridge. Apparently, the initial feedback from sub sandwich-loving college students was “extremely positive.”

“Subway Grab & Go has quickly gained traction as consumers are drawn to sandwiches made fresh daily from a brand they know and love, versus competitor items that rely on a 14-day plus shelf life,” said Karla Martinez, Director of Innovation for Non-traditional Development, in a press release.

The Subway Grab & Go smart fridge is currently available in 400 locations across America. Keep a look out because next year the fast food giant plans to expand this innovative customer experience to more locations.
