Japanese Designer Makes Traditional Beer Bottle Shape More Beach-Friendly

People have invented countless ways to make consuming ice-cold beer more convenient. From koozies and helmets to self-cooling cans, beer has inspired the most creative forms of alcohol consumption. 

A Japanese designer named Kenji Abe has created a new beer bottle shape designed to be enjoyed on the beach. The bottle, which is torpedo-like with a pointed, rounded bottom, can conveniently slide into sand without falling over. Traditional beer bottles aren’t made for uneven surfaces like sand, which means burying them in the sand to prevent spillage. 

 While Abe’s design solves the issue of sandy surfaces, the question remains of how tapered bottles can be packaged for retail. That’s a problem for another day. As for now, Abe’s bottles are just conceptual. He exhibited them at the Axis Gallery in Roppongi, Tokyo, for the 2nd International Conference on Design for Ocean Environments, with no plans to mass-produce.
