As the bird flu, known as the avian flu, begins to calm, so does its impact on U.S. egg prices. Denny’s, Waffle House and other restaurants added egg surcharges earlier this year. Denny’s never shared the exact amount of its surcharge, but Waffle House added a 50-cent increase. On May 21, the former announced that it had removed the additional charge, with the latter following on June 2.

The avian virus has caused the death of over 174.8 million poultry and wild bird since January 2022. According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, the cost of a dozen eggs rose to $6.23 back in March. In April, bird flu cases finally began to fall, along with the cost of eggs, which continue to drop. The average price is now $3.77.
