Coffee Calculator Tells You How Much You Could Save by Not Going to Starbucks

The first thing I thought when I plugged my, ahem, number into this coffee calculator? Well, fuck me. Created by USA Today, the Coffee Cost Calculator figures out how much you’re spending on your daily cup(s) of joe and how much your caffeine habit can end up costing you over a month, year and even three decades.

The estimates are based on a 16 ounce medium Starbucks coffee at $2.10 per cup or a home-brewed cup of Folgers or Maxwell House at $.08 per 16 ounce serving. For fun, we compared the costs of regular Starbucks drinkers to Folgers-in-a-cup brewers.

It starts off innocently enough. 1 Starbucks grande coffee…

Yikes. $766 is more than enough for a roundtrip flight from Los Angeles to Cancun. While nearly $23K could pay off a modest student loan in 30 years.

Now, here’s what happens when you plug in 2 Starbucks grandes.

Looks like most of our coffee habits are costing us a trip to Europe per year or two Passats in the next 30 years. Ouch.

So, what happens when you plug in the numbers for 2 cups of Folgers a day?

Of course. Over the course of 30 years, switching to your coffee pot will save you enough money to afford a handful of trips abroad and a new car.

Oh, and the best part? The numbers for the Starbucks beverages are based off one of the cheapest items on their menu — plain coffee — and not the $4 Caramel Frappuccino grande you really get.

So, what’s your number?
