Chipotle Sets Sights On Mexico: Announces First Restaurant Opening In 2026

Chipotle Mexican Grill is planning to open its first restaurant in Mexico by early 2026, announcing it plans to join forces with Alsea, a prominent restaurant group in Latin America. However, the bold move is definitely raising eyebrows as it’s the first time Chipotle is venturing into the home of Mexican cuisine.

Nate Lawton, Chipotle’s Chief Business Development Officer, believes that their well-known menu of fresh and flavorful dishes will appeal to locals. The CEO of Alsea, Armando Torrado, is also optimistic about the outcome, but as we know – success is not guaranteed.

By collaborating with Alsea, Chipotle aims to make a smart entry into the Mexican market given the group’s eminence. Alsea has extensive experience and insights into local preferences, which is a good argument that might give Chipotle an edge. However, this partnership has generated both buzz and skepticism alike.

This isn’t Chipotle’s first attempt at international expansion. The brand has previously ventured into markets like the Middle East and Europe, but breaking into Mexico presents unique challenges. It brings to mind Taco Bell’s failed attempt to enter the Mexican market over a decade ago, where the brand ultimately pulled out after the iconic purple bells failed to spark interest among locals.

As Chipotle gears up for its launch, the big question is whether it can capture the hearts of local and regional Mexican diners who are already have access to plenty of authentic local options.
