Clear Soy Sauce Exists—And It Won’t Stain A Thing

The Japanese have invented all sorts of amazing things, but if we’re being honest, soy sauce might be one of their best creations. Whether you drizzle it over rice, cannonball it with sushi, or add a savory touch to vanilla ice cream, few condiments compare to its versatile, umami-rich flavor.

That said, the downside to using soy sauce is that it easily stains clothes, table covers, and whatever it touches. And once it stains, it’s nearly impossible to remove, especially the darker soy sauce varieties. It doesn’t help that soy sauce typically comes in a bottle that, when dipped ever so slightly, shoots it out like a Super Soaker.

Luckily, today I learned about Clear “Crystal” Soy Sauce, a transparent variety of soy sauce created by Fundodai that delivers the umami without the u-messy. It’s a great alternative for those who want to avoid stains, at least visible ones. Or, for chefs who use soy sauce but want to avoid changing the color of their dishes.

While I doubt clear soy sauce will ever replace the real thing, it’s nice to know that it exists. If you end up ordering some, just make sure to be mindful of how much you use, because it might be hard to tell without the color.
