KFC Tests New Smash’d Potato Bowl

KFC has announced testing of new versions of its ever-popular Famous Bowls. The restaurant chain hopes to expand its consumer base by bringing more boneless and individualized menu offerings to the table. Enter, Smash’d Potato Bowl, featuring KFC’s Secret Recipe Fries, mashed potatoes with cheese sauce, bacon crumbles and a shredded cheese blend ($3.49; can be topped with five nuggets for $5.49).

Bowls have recently become one of the most popular items amongst fast food as they are often made with fresher ingredients, bring flavors together in every bite, and are typically (and oh-so conveniently) portable. All of these are key factors to the audience KFC would like to reach – millennials and Gen Z. “We want Millennials to know that we’re not just buckets of chicken,” says Ariel Olivo, marketing brand manager at KFC.

Let’s not forget bowls have been a part of KFC’s menu since 2006 when the Famous Bowl was first introduced (mashed potatoes, gravy, sweet corn, crispy popcorn chicken and a three-cheese blend) and more than 81 million were sold in their first 10 months on the menu… that’s a whole lot of chicken and potatoes.

Fans can get the new Smash’d Potato Bowl for a limited time only at KFC locations in Pittsburgh, PA.
