San Francisco Mayor’s Veto Overturned: Still no Happy Meals with toys

The Happy Meal Ban in San Francisco earlier this month was later vetoed by Mayor Gavin Newsom. In a recent turn of events, as reported by CNN, just a few moments ago, an 8 out of 11 vote from the Board of Supervisors overrode the Mayor’s decisions, re-instituting the “healthy meal ordinance”.

To recap, these new regulations would force any meal that was advertised with a toy must meet new regulations. The regulations maintain that the food and drink must:

contain fewer than 600 calories, and less than 35 percent of the total calories would be allowed to come from fat. The meal must contain half a cup of fruit and three-fourths a cup of vegetables, and offer less than 640 milligrams of sodium and less than 0.5 milligrams of trans fat. Breakfast will have the option of offering half cups of fruit or vegetables. (CNN)

This ordinance will put a significant damper on up-and-coming franchisees in the area, along with franchisees who’ve been there for years. What do you guys think? Has the obesity epidemic among youth become so significant that the government needs to design menus for respective restaurants?
