This Pasta Look Like It Belongs In A Gallery
David Rivillo is not your ordinary pasta maker. The Ph.D.-certified chemist and chef designs pasta with chromatic color patterns inspired by his favorite Venezuelan artist, Carlos Cruz-Diez, who is known for a style called “kinetic art.” Using natural dyes and inspired by indigenous Venezuelan motifs, animals, and nature, Rivillo decorates pasta with colorful stripes, polka dots and complex patterns. The result is pasta worthy of being framed and displayed at a gallery.
Pasta traditionally plays second fiddle to the sauce, but Rivillo’s creations are the star. A coral spaghetti that resembles a scarlet king snake, ravioli with refined black-and-white stripes made for Dolce & Gabbana, and tortelli with geometric color patterns akin to artist Piet Mondrian’s work are just a few examples. The best part, however, is that Rivillo ships his pasta worldwide via WhatsApp.
While I was unable to find was the pricing for his pasta gift boxes. A 2024 article from the New York Times says that they start at $40 for 2.1 ounces, plus shipping. Click through the gallery at the top to see more of Rivillo’s eye-catching pasta designs.
