The #eggcrackchallenge Proves Why Some Viral Trends Shouldn’t Go Viral

Everyone loves hopping on a good viral trend. It’s fun, makes you feel in on the joke, and innocent… well, most of the time. There’s a viral TikTok trend going around called the #eggcrackchallenge that has convinced parents across America to crack eggs on their children’s foreheads. Even as I type this my mind says “WTF?!”

@prank_joy Egg cracking prank – No children are injured in this clip #funny #fun #funnyvideos #fail #eggchallenge #funnybaby #baby ♬ الصوت الأصلي – 💥😂 Prank Joy 💥😂

In countless videos uploaded to the app, parents are seemingly enjoying quality time with their child in the kitchen. When it comes time to crack an egg into the mixing bowl, the parents demonstrate by lightly tapping it against a kitchen surface before suddenly smashing it into their child’s unsuspecting frontal lobe.

@amber99marie No child was hurt in the making of this video 😭😂 #fypageeee #eggman #crackeggchallenge #boymomma #followw #tiktokers_official_team ♬ original sound – Amber🥰

The crack force ranges from video to video — some kids might actually need a neck brace. Don’t judge me if I chuckled a bit as I watched tiny heads fly back. My amusement quickly vanished after tiny tears began flowing.

@ibemak.n He didn’t know what was going on 😭😭😭 #eggcrackchallenge #fyp #toddlersoftiktok #dontcallpawpatrol ♬ original sound – MäK

The jury’s still out on whether the trend is abuse or simply entertainment. I personally lean a bit more towards the former, as I generally believe children are tougher than today’s social media-policing. Yet at the same time, I can’t imagine anyone liking an egg cracked on their forehead without their permission. Even giving someone permission to crack one on your forehead seems weird for most life scenarios.

And at the end of the day, it’s just plain ol’ rude.
