Jack In The Box Used An Ice Cream Sandwich Machine To Create Its Wildest Burger Yet

Jack in the Box is trying something new in Los Angeles, and you’ll have exactly two weeks — and one restaurant — to get your hands on it.

The chain is launching its first-ever Hype Drop, a new series of hyper-limited menu experiments designed to test unexpected ideas and generate some buzz before they disappear. First up is the Cosmic Cheeseburger, a stuffed and pressed burger that looks more like a flying saucer than anything currently on the Jack in the Box menu.

Rather than a traditional burger build, the Cosmic Cheeseburger gets pressed into a circular shape with its edges completely sealed. The process crisps up the outside while keeping everything inside hot, soft, and melty. A Jack design pressed directly into the top of the bun completes the UFO-adjacent look.

Even better, the whole thing exists because somebody looked at an ice cream sandwich machine and wondered what else they could shove into it.

The idea came out of a Jack in the Box innovation event where its Culinary, Operations, and Marketing teams experimented with equipment the company already had on hand. The machine originally made ice cream sandwiches, but the team eventually adapted it to press and seal hot sandwiches instead.

That experiment became the Cosmic platform and, in turn, the first release under Jack in the Box’s new Hype Drops program.

Unlike a typical fast-food test that might roll out across an entire city or market, Jack is going deliberately tiny with this one. The Cosmic Cheeseburger will be available at just one participating Los Angeles restaurant for two weeks (1220 Centinela Ave, Inglewood, CA).

Jack in the Box says Hype Drops will give the chain a way to release bold menu experiments directly to customers through intentionally scarce drops built around novelty and exclusivity. In other words, Jack is borrowing a page from streetwear: small quantities, short windows, and enough FOMO to get people talking.

Whether the Cosmic Cheeseburger eventually escapes Area 51 and lands on menus elsewhere remains to be seen. For now, LA gets first contact.
