Could Chicken & Ice Cream Be The Next Chicken & Waffles? A Harlem Ice Cream Shop Thinks So
Sugar Hill Creamery, a burgeoning Harlem-based ice cream chain, is asking the big questions, namely: Could fried chicken and ice cream be the new chicken and waffles?
Harlem, of course, is the birthplace of the famed sweet-and-savory dish, so the conditions are ripe for the birth of its evolution. The creamery has partnered with another Harlem staple, Charles Pan-Fried Chicken, to bring the idea to life, and the two have been attracting wraparound-the-corner lines with their Sunday’s Sundae pop-up.

The menu includes Charles’ pan-fried chicken with your choice of either its homemade peach cobbler or Irish butter sugarcane honey cornbread, finished with a scoop of Sugar Hill Creamery’s mac and cheese or cornbread ice cream, then drizzled with your choice of blueberry hot sauce, brandied peach hot sauce, or yam caramel sauce.
So far, they’ve held two Sunday’s Sundae pop-ups and, thanks to the response, plan to host another one this Sunday, Aug. 16, from 1 p.m. to 5 p.m. at Charles Pan-Fried Chicken, located at 340 W. 145th St. in New York City. Considering how popular it’s become, it’d be wise to arrive early so you can snag some chicken and ice cream before they run out.
Sugar Hill Creamery was founded in 2017 by husband-and-wife duo Nick and Petrushka Bazin Larsen and is located in Central Harlem at 184 Lenox Ave., between 119th and 120th streets. It’s open every day from 2 p.m. to 11 p.m., except Saturday (12 p.m. to 11 p.m.) and Sunday (12 p.m. to 10 p.m.).
