A mullet and a cheeseburger aren’t two things you normally think of together, but that’ll change if McDonald’s New Zealand has its way. The chain recently dropped the McMullet, a limited-edition, tongue-in-cheek cheeseburger with an extra-long slice of cheese poking out from the back bun.

Yup, it’s burger in the front, party in the back.

If you’re familiar with New Zealand, then you know how popular the mullet hairstyle is there. It was once the go-to style for societal outliers i.e. punks, bikers, metalheads, etc. The McMullet serves as a nod, not only to its enduring legacy, but its recent resurgence among sports stars, celebrities, and Gen Z.

McDonald’s teamed up with McCann, a local creative agency, to bring the McMullet to life. It was released during a live activation at the Penrose McDonald’s in Auckland, where hundreds of mullet-rocking fans received one for free. The location was transformed to resemble a mullet-themed restaurant and barbers were on-site to hook fans up with fresh cuts.

It’s go time 😤 we’re making it. Cheeseburger with a Mullet, only at Macca’s Penrose. This Saturday, 2-4pm. Be there.

Unfortunately, the official McMullet is exclusive to New Zealand. But, if you’d like to mullet-fy your burger, McDonald’s offers a DIY option: Simply order a cheeseburger with an extra slice of cheese and let the slice hang out the back.
