Someone Tried To Drone-Deliver A Crab Boil Into A South Carolina Prison

A Lee Correctional Institution inmate won’t be getting a delicious holiday delivery this year. A guard at the South Carolina prison discovered a package of crab legs, steak, and Old Bay seasoning—all delivered into the yard by a drone.

A photo of the package, which also included marijuana and cigarettes, was posted on the South Carolina Department of Corrections’ X account with the hashtag #ContrabandChristmas. The caption read: “Seems some folks were planning an early holiday Old Bay crab boil and steak dinner along with their marijuana and cigarettes—all dropped by a drone at Lee CI.”

Prison officials say the incident is under investigation and no arrests have been made.

According to reports, drones are frequently used to smuggle items into prisons, prompting corrections officers to monitor the yard and surrounding areas closely. Flying a drone near a prison in South Carolina is a misdemeanor punishable by up to 30 days in jail, while dropping contraband into a prison is a felony that carries a sentence of up to 10 years.
