McDonald’s Canada Rolls Out New McVeggie Burger

McDonald’s has been trying to crack the vegetarian/vegan code for some time. In 2019, it partnered with Beyond Meat to test the P.L.T. (Plant.Lettuce.Tomato) at 28 locations in Ontario, Canada, before discontinuing it after six months for reasons unknown.

The McPlant arrived in the U.S. in 2020, but sadly, it face-planted pretty terribly, failing in two test markets—though it did well overseas. The patty was made of peas, rice and potatoes. Now McDonald’s Canada has announced the McVeggie. Could the third go-round be the charm?

The new vegetarian-friendly menu item will land at locations nationwide on September 16, and features a breaded veggie patty made with a blend of seasoned vegetables—including carrots, green beans, zucchini, peas, soybeans, broccoli, and corn—and creamy mayo-style sauce on a toasted sesame bun. Customers will have the option of a Spicy Habanero version, too.

“When we introduced the McVeggie in our restaurants during the test earlier this year, the response from guests was incredible. They appreciated having a veggie patty that delivered on both flavour and quality,” said Kathy Damrell, Ontario McDonald’s franchisee.

Coinciding with the McVeggie, McDonald’s Canada is releasing a grilled cheese Happy Meal and lettuce and tomato snack wrap in an effort to offer more inclusive menu items.
