Fish Expert Claims The World’s Ugliest Fish Is Also The Most Tasty

Everyone has heard the famous saying, “Don’t judge a book by its cover.” Well, if it looks like the blobfish, which was once voted the world’s ugliest animal (fish or not), it better be a pretty darn good book. According to Daily Mail, a fish expert is claiming that the blobfish is actually one of the tastiest fish — period. A man named Alex Stollznow, who works at Australia’s Sydney Fish Markets, decided to test the theory after local fishermen captured one.

“As far as I know, I’m the only person in existence to try it, Stollznow told Daily Mail.

The fish markets usually only serve blobfish when they catch it by accident, and on average, they catch around half a dozen each year and donate them to museums or universities. Local fishermen caught one last month, which inspired Stollznow to give it a taste test.

He sliced a filet from the fish and decided to cook it with a blowtorch. “It was rich and sweet. It tasted like butter poached lobster tail. The flesh was particularly nice,” he said in response. It isn’t clear whether he added any seasoning or if it was just the pure taste of the blobfish. “Almost everything that swims tastes good,” he quipped, adding that he’d definitely be eating it again.

Apparently, the fish is available for purchase locally, but Stollznow said that no one ever buys it. The blobfish is actually cheap and costs less than $5. Despite its apparent deliciousness, the blobfish is too rare to be used by restaurants. The homely sea creature can be found up to 1km (0.621371 mi) deep in the Southern Ocean around Australia and New Zealand and surprisingly, the world has only known of its existence since 2003. Today, there is still very little information about the blobfish.
