Tacros, The Internet’s Latest Food Gimmick, Are Pissing Some People Off

2018’s first viral food gimmick, tacros, is here. The hybrid croissant taco shells come with Instagram fame, sure, but also are surrounded in internet controversy as well.

According to SFGate, the amalgamation can be found at Vive la Tarte in the Ferry Terminal Building of San Francisco. The unique croissant dough is more on the salty side than the typical sweet to complement the flavors inside. You’ll find them stuffed with pulled pork, chicken, or even barbecued jackfruit alongside veggies and salsa. It’s also apparently quite messy, as the filling reportedly soaks through the croissant and makes it fall apart.

Apart from those structural issues, the tacro has also been targeted by many as an abomination to both tacos and croissants. Here’s what folks are saying about the new hype item:

However you look at it, honestly, this is just either a folded, soggy croissant sandwich or a “torta” with the wrong kind of bread — neither of which sound appealing. Also, these cost a whopping $12, which even by San Franciscan standards is a lot of money for a single taco.

San Francisco’s first contribution to 2018’s viral foods may have gone a little too far for some people’s cultural taste, but it’s the lack of structural integrity that allegedly really makes this inedible eye candy. Should the call to get a bazillion Instagram likes for your tacros photos still allure you, Foodbeast’s Isai Rocha sums up perfectly why you shouldn’t:

“I wouldn’t pay $12 for some hipster-ass French tacos.”
