The days of trying to decide what to order at Starbucks are nearing their end. The company is using ChatGPT to test an app designed to customize orders based on everyday factors like mood, what you’re craving, weather, and even your outfit.

Customers can try the app out by opening ChatGPT, navigating to the app directory, and typing “Starbucks app” into the search bar. Once it opens, they can ask, or prompt, @starbucks to customize their drink, and even upload a photo of the weather, or their outfit to personalize it further. Orders can be placed in ChatGPT and completed in the Starbucks app or on the website.

“Over the past year, one thing has become clear: customers aren’t always starting with a menu. They’re starting with a feeling,” Paul Riedel, SVP, digital and loyalty at Starbucks, said in a statement. “We wanted to meet customers right at that moment of inspiration and make it easier than ever to find a drink that fits.”

Starbucks is the first major chain to incorporate ChatGPT into the ordering process. As the beverage sector continues to grow, the app can help solidify it as a leader in the space. Though interestingly, according to Nation’s Restaurant News, Little Cesar’s is also launching a ChatGPT ordering app. So, that may signal a future trend for fast food chains.

It’s “an opportunity for us to listen, learn and refine as we go,” Riedel said. “You’ll see us continue exploring new ways technology can delight our customers while supporting our baristas. This is only the beginning.”
